MIAMI – June 4, 2012 – The BURGER KING™ Scholars Program today announced that it has awarded nearly 2,000 scholarships to high school graduates in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, totaling approximately $2.2 million. For the second consecutive year, four major awards were given, including three $50,000 James W. McLamore WHOPPER™ Scholarship Awards and one $25,000 King Award. In addition, four students won $5,000 regional scholarships and 1,986 students were awarded $1,000 scholarships.
Created in memory of BURGER KING® co-founder James W. McLamore, the BURGER KING™ Scholars program has awarded a total of 17,064 scholarships to deserving students and employees across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, representing $17.6 Million in awards since the program's inception in 2000. The BURGER KING™ Scholars program is one of the premier programs of the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Burger King Corp. Formerly known as the HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Foundation, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation was renamed to honor the BURGER KING® brand’s co-founder, James W. McLamore, who’s commitment to philanthropy and education made him a pillar of community service in South Florida during his lifetime. Through its national fundraising efforts, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation increased this year’s BURGER KING™ Scholars program fund by more than 50 percent.
“In honor of James W. McLamore’s legacy, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation continues to embrace the potential of our future leaders, and is dedicated to helping students realize their dreams of continuing their education,” said Jill Granat, president, BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation. “We are thrilled to have seen such significant growth of the BURGER KING™ Scholars program this year, enabling us to award a record number of scholarships to benefit so many students.”
Scholarship recipients were selected based on their grade point average, extracurricular activities, community service and/or work experience. Both BURGER KING® employees and nonemployees are eligible to apply. More than 20 percent of this year’s scholarships were awarded to employees or children of employees, including one of the James W. McLamore WHOPPER™ Scholarship Awards.
Scholarship awards help students offset the cost of attending college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school. Students throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada are eligible for the scholarships.
